Why shelters?

The competition is an extension of Learning By Doing, an exhibition in the Guggenheim Museum Sackler Center for Arts Education that features plans, photographs, and models of student-built shelters from the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. For the past seven decades, students at this school have taken on the challenge of designing, building, and living in small shelters nestled in the landscapes of the school’s Arizona and Wisconsin campuses. In working on these shelters, students consider human needs for safety and comfort, as well as the relationship between architecture and place.

Design It: Shelter Competition opens up the project to you. If you could build a shelter anywhere in the world, where would it be? How would you design it to respond to the surrounding environment?

Key Dates and Deadlines

You can submit your design from now until August 23. After the submission period, current Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture students will select a group of finalists. Public voting on these finalists opens on September 7 and runs until October 10. On October 21, 2009, the People’s Prize will be announced along with a special Juried Prize chosen by a jury of experts.

Estuaire is also a political and tourist project, aimed specifically at accompanying and spurring the foundation of the Nantes - Saint-Nazaire metropolis, and using the physical line drawn by the Loire river as the basis of a tour full of secrets.
Until 2011, the National scene of Nantes - le lieu unique - will bear the project; Estuaire will then get a life of its own, with the creation of an  organisation, aimed at maintaining the sites, communicating on the project and keeping it accessible to tourists.

This open park, made of art installations, of natural or man-made heritage, of remarkable industrial buildings, will give the estuary a striking  identity. Sensible town and country planning will be necessary - walking paths, cycle tracks, cottages, shelters, camping site, viewpoints,   belvederes, gardens, sports grounds - and will shape and make visible its assets.

Estuaire is very proud of its natural territory. Each installation, fascinating as it is, will inspire our perception of the landscape, and will draw a different perspective on an exceptional natural environment.

The strength of Estuaire is also to be at the meeting point of all the partners, environmental associations, industries, farmers, local  professional bodies, fishermen, hunters, the Coastal Protection Agency, all working hand in hand to increasingly make of the estuary a Éuropean tourist destination.

The riverside towns are now starting to design the riverbanks, to build pontoons, hence to make the project grow stronger. Moreover, the
juxtaposition of Estuaire’s art installations next to the cultural heritage of each riverside town reinforces the power of one another.

Based on the Isle of Nantes, the site chosen for Les Anneaux represents the link between two eras: the great maritime and naval past of the town, and today’s great architectural and urban projects, putting Nantes on the European stage.

Daniel Buren wanted to highlight the double perspective of the Isle of Nantes: the architectural perspective, drawn by the docks and
the warehouses, and the natural perspective delineated by the Loire river. A series of 18 rings facing the river offer as many different cutouts of the landscape. At night, the enlightened rings - red, blue and green, three colours at the basis of so many others - become multiseeing
tools…

Rezé has a strong architectural heritage (Le Corbusier, Dominique Perrault or Massimiliano Fuksas). One of its quarter, a former fisherman village, overlooks the river: Trentemoult. This is where Roman Signer made the decision to start off his project using an old concrete factory,
built at the end of the sixties, and which is now derelict.

Following the creation of the channel and numerous planned landscape developments, the Lavau site has slowly turned into a marsh. And this is the particular aspect of the estuary that Tadashi Kawamata has decided to put forward, as early as 2007.
Tadashi Kawamata then initiates work with the village population as well as with students, creating a melting pot, which is vital to his creative process.
At Lavau, the commune is favourable to contemplating nature. He designs a new identity and uses the wooden path leading to an observatory, to offer a new viewpoint over the river to everyone. The building site of the Observatory started in 2007 with the end of
the path: little by little, the visitor rises in the middle of the reed beds and reaches a vast platform where a tower is built.
In 2009, the artist rounds up the construction by adding a wooden path in the surrounding meadows and reed beds that are drawing the line between the tower and the village. Tadashi Kawamata creates here a little path in wood, 40 cm above the ground, which is embedded in the
marsh and seems to float in the natural environment.

The construction of the German submarine base between 1940 and 1942 disrupted significantly the port; ensuing its construction, the heavy bombardment destroyed almost all of the “Little Breton California”.
Nowadays, the project Town-Port is a vast town planning with the submarine base at its heart. Here, the vastness of the landscape
and its industrial identity challenged his capacity to explore space: the piece, a 2 km long painting, is the biggest ever executed by the artist.
From a viewpoint located on the roof of the panoramic terrace at the submarine base, Felice Varini draws a “horizontal line” which hugs the landscape around the Saint-Nazaire port. The division of the shapes above and below this line split the landscape into different sequences. The artist reveals a shape painted on a single level, a shape that detaches from and places itself on top of the architecture to which it seems to belong.
Leaving the viewpoint on the terrace now means experiencing the third dimension and seeing the explosion of the figure.

“Le Jardin du Tiers Paysage”
Open to the public since 1998 thanks to the project of the urbanist Manuel de Sola Morales, the roof of the submarine base is now an open-air terrace between the sky and the ocean.

The Jardin du Tiers-Paysage is triptych which takes advantage of the three architectural devices of the site: The Wood of Aspen will be placed in Les Chambres d’éclatement des bombes in 2009, The garden of Grasses and Stonecrap in The Covered Rows scheduled for 2010,
and The Label Garden will be in The Pit in 2011.
Appearing suddenly from the concrete of the base, a 107 aspens with bright leaves sway in the wind. Having the base to scintillate and quiver is the first intention - poetic intention - of Gilles Clément, who sees in the base a place of resistance, where the ecological diversity of
the estuary can reside.

This is the new random wardrobe “Peggy”. From a cubic structure fixed to the ceiling eight elastics ropes hold eight funny & coloured out of scale clothes-peg .
A compact object, funtional and creative. It can host tens of clothes and until eight winter jackets.

CANE, the table is born by an essential primordial drawing. The archetip, the drawing a child does representing the dog, takes shape. Its main features are the legs, the number of which, different on the two sides, marks the seat places. An extension of the final part of the surface can be used as a tray table . It’s a democratic table with no hierarchy. Mealtime is stretched for 3 meters and 8 seats equally distributed, for 8 people all the same but all different. Cane invites people to take their place in pre ordinated spaces. It is designed to make meal time a game, a collective experience. Cane is designed by Paula in collaboration with Atelier Grafite (Luca Leonori and Stefano Stefani).

PAULA
designers for necessity

Paula collective is born in 2002 by 3 young talented roman designers Gabriel Berretta, Simone Bartolucci and Valerio Ciampicacigli united by passion and enriched by past experiences going from urban writing, to arts, from advertising communication to pure handcraft; in 2003 they decided to unify their minds with a common aim: to produce something bigger.
The guidelines of the group focus on the elaboration of what Paula defines the key question and the knot to unleash : “what about design?”: a challenge, born from the refusal of a passive compliance to common attitudes, founded on research as on creative errors, getting to formal and conceptual languages unexplored since today… but even not.
Paula’s main focus is the creation of vanguard objects. However it is very close to artistic realities of its territory (writing, street art, photography, video art), and dreams about a “globaltotal” commistion design.
Paula group is now working on a series of “poetic” and “institutional” designs, collaborating with established companies and young designers. And developping an intense research activity : since years projects on urban, technical or vanguard realities are at work; our aim is that of giving life to objects and/or instruments of alternative knowledge based on our experiences and of who, like us, loves to get involved in the world.

The ergonomic shell is made of resin for food (non-toxic), the skin is leather “flower” natural, tanned with vegetable additives, formed by strips sewn by hand with double stitching on sight. The legs are stainless steel and in the final model provides 4 extendable “SUPERFLEX” springs calibrated to withstand a weight of 45 kg and sliding retractable wheels. The other proposed model differs only in the coating which consists of a non-toxic paint, usually used for toys (not dissolving with saliva).

It seems difficult to understand how it is possible that more than 500 Offices worked  on open competition organized by the state and that at the end nobody get honored! It is also useless to remind that many time in those kind of competitions, architects, designers and artists are working for free.

I try myself to do the competition, but after few weeks it come out that the difficulties we are facing are probably due to the complexity of the topic or to the unclear or too ambitious will of the organizer. We finally decided not to take part.

Are the 500 participants (people who submits their work) not good enough or was the question bad formulated by the client. Are some organizations involved protecting the participants?

During our travels in the world, we often encounter increadible grafitti paintings, sometimes in unusuall or hard-to reach places which makes one wonder which superhero painted them.

Designer Stefan Rechsteiner came up with  a new concept of graff-bot that can get to places that are normally out of reach…not that writers seem to have a problem getting to those places to start with (like mentioned before.)

Designer´s Description : “Couleur sur l’Objet” is in short a wall climbing printer, based on the principle of the vortex-robots that are able to climb walls with the help of suction. These robots are combined with a color application device and a controlling software that allows to print designs on large walls.

Called “Couleur sur l’Objet”, this small device is aimed in aiding urban - artists doing what they do best.  With a little help from High-Tech, computers, and some software, you can actually programm this robot to do the job for you.

We, At DesignLoft think that this is a great idea, especially when thinking about the potential it can have OUTSIDE the urban - grafitti scene.

You can design with ease and reproduce huge wall paintings also IN-DOORS  (Frescos, patterns etc.. maybe even the new Capella Sistina..) , or perhaps even use this devie for counter-act it´s own purpose itself, by helping to Clean the walls of specific buildings.

In Milano Salone Satellite, 22-27 April 2009 showed a selection of tableware in ceramic.

In Istanbul I-DECO design and decoration fair, 5-9 March 2009 Gaetano showed a system of mirror “Climbing the mirror” for hanging clothes.
Gaetano’s works are product in Italy by Improntabarre, a ceramic company based in Sicily.

Your own Personal Jesus (Ambiente Messe Frankfurt, Talents, Frankfurt am Main, 2009)
The attempt to re-design the symbols of different religions starts when I realized that the iconography of these themes is often old fashioned and conservative. I started to design a simple cross, emphasizing the outline of the man and simplifying the symbol the more I could. The sense of sufferance disappears giving place to a new light cross in different colours. One remembers ironically the colors of Italian flag, mainland of Catholicism. Your own Personal Jesus is one of 8 products chosen by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levian for Personal Shopper, Tendence ‘09, Frankfurt am Main.

Tulipiere (Salone Satellite, Milano 2008)
The vase for tulips has an organic geometrical shape. You can put only one flower per hole, allowing the leaves display themselves. The blue and white glaze discreetly appears out of the vase mouths, inside and outside change place, playing to invert the common sense. The rough and deeply grey external part preserves the inside beauty, like an inland empire.
Tulipiere is now in the permanent collection of design of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Teapots (Salone Satellite, Milano 2008)
My interest in tea-ware started in China, where I spent some time in a porcelain workshop in Jingdezhen in 2006. Back in Italy, I decided to combine ceramics with soft, handy material to help gripping the pot. In my works I often apply to the combination of soft and hard material. In this case I looked for both a formal and functional solution, wrapping up the teapot body a band or a coat of neoprene, soft felt or silicone, to avoid to burn one’s fingers and to keep tea warm. Bands and coats are heat-resisting and easily removable to wash the teapot. Each part of the teapot is functional to the other. The neoprene band and white ceramic teapot is is now in the permanent collection of design of the Art Institute of Chicago and in the artshop of The Getty Museum, California.

Gaetano Di Gregorio was born in Catania, Italy, in 1972. He has been living in Venice since 1991 where he combines his work as architect with that of ceramist and designer.
His artistic process often links computer graphics and textual elements, that are applied to ceramics. Emphasis is placed on the process, favoring the narrative and serial dimension that dialogue with memory and the environment, and become conveyers of poetic instances, at times a paradox.
In 2006 experimented with porcelain techniques in Jingdezhen, China in Sanbao Institute for Ceramic Art, Residency for artists.
In 2003 he founded Spiazzi (www.spiazzi.info) with other artists, a collective studio and cultural centre of visual arts and design in Venice. Spiazzi promotes Manos, an open air market for auto-producer designers in Venice Rialto fish market.

TECHNICAL INFO
The lamp consists of three elements: the stand, vertical support and lamp’s active body. The base semi-circulr stand holds the batteries for energy accumultion, the weight of which stabilizes the lamp.

Vertical support has an elbow at its top that enables the rottation of the lamp’s disc and its positioning towards the natural source of light. On the upper surface of the disc, which is 96 cm in diameter, there is a round glass sheet and and a black plastic tedler with integrated PV cells (thin film-cells). In the center of the disc there is a layer that carries the LED diodes, while the bottom portion of the disc closes with a sheet of semitransarent polycarbonate. The disc has a aluminum ring-shaped jacket. The lamp is 208 cm high. Integrated PV technology and batteries enable the lamp to function appx. 5 hours a day, with 2 hours minimum of collecting energy. With PV thin-film technology advancemnt, the lamps performance will improve.

ABOUT DESIGNERS
od-do architects studio was formed by Nataša Ilinčić and Jugoslava Kljakić in 2005 in Belgrade. They are interested in interdisciplinary design, encompassing architecture, furniture design and production design. They participated in Ghost project and Belgrade Design Week in 2006/2007/2008, London Design Festival in 2006, Saloni Satellite in 2008. The were the recipients of the ULUPUDS award for the best interior at the Belgrade Architecture Salon for the multibrand store BUZZ and the DAB Award for their design concept of the City park at New Belgrade (2008). Multipurpose od-do design is described as “portable home objects for active minds created to respond to the complexity of modern living”. Often simple, but humorous, these objects require interaction. The character of the products dictates simplicity and efficiency in form, function and materialization.

TECHNICAL INFO

Arc lounge consists of 13 identical “ribs” of plywood, 8 mm thick, which are ergonomically cut, creating a very comfortable (rocking) lounge. The ribs are connected with an elastic band, and the lounge is wider in the middle because the ribs are positioned with a comb-shaped distancer. Disassembly is simple - distancer is removed, ribs snap back together. The lounge is produced on CNC machine, which is one of the reasons it is suitable for mass production. Dimensions: 1960 x 720 x8 mm, dimensions of the distancer: 510 x 120x 16 mm.

ABOUT DESIGNERS

Marija Bjelaković, Milica Jović, Emir Bećiragić are senior year students of the Faculty for Wood processing and Design. Their interests are directed at designing wooden furniture, and they pay greatest attention to designing eco-friendly furniture. They have an extensive experience exhibiting their designs, as they have participated in several internationl fairs and exhibitions, receiving many awards for their work.

Useful tiles
The utilization of tiles is realized in a taunting and ironic way by having the tiles themselves becoming kitchen utensils. Such collection complies of a series of objects usually used for cooking, which come out of the kitchen tiles on the wall. Each one of these objects besides being an aesthetically valuable piece of complementary furniture, it is also a perfectly functioning tool.
Tired of looking for our utensils around the kitchen, we could have lemon squeezers, funnels, nutcrackers, bottle openers, mortar and pestle and whatever else, near at hand, perfectly integrated as part of our kitchen décor.

Picture frame / table
The picture frame is transformed into an emergency table; the emergency table is transformed into a picture frame which can be displayed as a furnishing object. Living spaces are often smaller and smaller, thus furniture with two or more purposes is often being proposed. This is a simple furnishing object which when needed can become a useful surface for dinner parties. It is also possible to use in the frame one’s own favourite pictures.

The wall is fitted with “ghost” objects which in the least invasive way carry out their own functions. The objects vary from lamps, clocks, coat hangers, umbrella stands, wall vases and other useful tools which are camouflaged by the pre-existent style of the wall.

Coffee tables
The peculiarity of this object is that it is made up by two identical, interweavable surfaces. Thus, by sliding the two surfaces together, the table can acquire shapes that go from the classical squared one of a simple coffee table, to more fanciful ones. The table is available in varnished wood, shiny steel and transparent Plexiglas, allowing choices of chromatic combinations and opening the house décor to personalised solutions.
