On the occasion of the exhibitions Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward and Learning By Doing, the Guggenheim and Google SketchUp invite amateur and professional designers from around the world to enter Design It: Shelter Competition. From now until August 23, you can submit a 3-D shelter for any location in the world using Google SketchUp and Google Earth.

Why shelters?

The competition is an extension of Learning By Doing, an exhibition in the Guggenheim Museum Sackler Center for Arts Education that features plans, photographs, and models of student-built shelters from the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. For the past seven decades, students at this school have taken on the challenge of designing, building, and living in small shelters nestled in the landscapes of the school’s Arizona and Wisconsin campuses. In working on these shelters, students consider human needs for safety and comfort, as well as the relationship between architecture and place.

Design It: Shelter Competition opens up the project to you. If you could build a shelter anywhere in the world, where would it be? How would you design it to respond to the surrounding environment?

Virtual shelter design with Google SketchUp

Key Dates and Deadlines

You can submit your design from now until August 23. After the submission period, current Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture students will select a group of finalists. Public voting on these finalists opens on September 7 and runs until October 10. On October 21, 2009, the People’s Prize will be announced along with a special Juried Prize chosen by a jury of experts.

Wolfgang Thierse, Vice President of the German Bundestag, attends the opening of the exhibition of the 532 proposed designs for the Freedom and Unity Memorial at the Kronprinzenpalais on May 5, 2009 in Berlin, Germany. Germany’s Federal Office for Civil Engineering and Regional Planning had sponsored an open competition for the memorial, which is to commemorate German reunificiation in 1991, though the jury failed to decide on a winning entry and the competition will be held again under different conditions. Many of the people who entered the competition are furious over the result.

It seems difficult to understand how it is possible that more than 500 Offices worked on open competition organized by the state and that at the end nobody get honored! It is also useless to remind that many time in those kind of competitions, architects, designers and artists are working for free.

I try myself to do the competition, but after few weeks it come out that the difficulties we are facing are probably due to the complexity of the topic or to the unclear or too ambitious will of the organizer. We finally decided not to take part.

Are the 500 participants (people who submits their work) not good enough or was the question bad formulated by the client. Are some organizations involved protecting the participants?

The Sustainable Furnishings Council and World Market Center Las Vegas are proud to once again bring you One Good Chair Design Competition.

Intro

All sustainability is local, the saying goes. But how can manufactured, transportable products such as furniture become “local”? In a global market, can there be a truly regional product?

Historically, many chairs evolved out of the subtle relationships between culture and climate, people and place. The low tilt of the Adirondacks Chair nestled into the mountainous terrain of upper New York State, mingling among the hemlocks from which it was made, and its wide arms speak of lazy summer days. The springy Joggling Bench is the very picture of Charleston’s narrow porches and hot, sticky evenings. And both use little material—the original Adirondacks Chair was made from a dozen pieces cut from a single board, and the Joggling Bench is a single board.

How we sit relates more to culture than anatomy, and many cultures are chair-free. Ghandi sat on the floor as a way to resist “Westernization” and honor local customs. The hammock originated 1,000 years ago in migratory cultures of Central America—woven from the bark of the Hamack tree, it traveled light, floated above the ground to fend off insects, and breathed in the humid air.

Challenge

Design an original chair that embodies and enhances a particular place, anywhere in the world but one you know and love, even if you don’t live there. We hope to see ideas from across the globe. Your concept might reinterpret local customs or start from scratch, but either way it should stimulate a tangible sense of belonging to its cultural and natural context. Demonstrate visually and verbally how your design springs from local conditions:

Identity of place

Regional ecology

Indigenous materials

Conservation of resources through form

Culturally determined notions of comfort

Social history

How does your design fit—right here? How does it create a good fit between people and place, a good fit for the body, a good fit for the ecosystem?

The focus of the competition is the lounge chair or similar casual seating-simple objects to assist the body in repose. Commercial office chairs and other specialized functions are not appropriate, but otherwise you have as much latitude as you can explain and illustrate in a convincing way. Outdoor and public furniture are especially encouraged. Entries are restricted to original concepts that have not been built. Commercially sold products are prohibited.

In addition to the special criteria of the “Fit Right Here” challenge, entries should demonstrate the three basic principles of “One Good Chair”:

* Make good (Material conservation). How can shape optimize resources in design, fabrication, and shipping? What forms create little waste but lots of taste?
* Feel good (Physical comfort). How can shape aid the body in the act of sitting? How do different people sit? How might they?
* Look good (Emotional resonance). What kinds of images create emotional bond between viewer and product? What is the intersection of sustainability and sensuality?

California State Agency Launches International
Ideas Competition to Address Sea Level Rise

The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC)––the California state agency responsible for protecting San Francisco Bay––today launched an initiative called Rising Tides, a first-of-its-kind international design idea competition aimed at generating innovative solutions that deal with adapting shoreline areas to sea level rise. The competition is a response to scientific estimates that global warming may raise water levels in the Bay over four feet by the end of the century.

The competition was authorized by the 27-member commission in late 2008 and is made possible by a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management. The competition offers monetary awards and international recognition for outstanding ideas in a variety of categories. The first prize in the competition is $10,000. Registration begins on April 6, 2009, and submissions are due June 29, 2009. To register, visit http://www.risingtidescompetition.com.

Entries will be juried by a panel of renowned leaders in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, life science and environmental policy. All entries will be exhibited in San Francisco the week of July 13-19, 2009. The competition is open to everyone, including individuals, organizations and design firms as well as academics, researchers, students and innovators of all types.

“The prospect of climate change is real,” stated BCDC Executive Director Will Travis. “Through this competition, our goal is to motivate people to think in new ways about how to adapt coastal development to sea level rise.”

Over half the world’s population lives in coastal areas that are vulnerable to the worst effects of global warming, including rising seas and intense storms that can result in flooded communities, inundated transportation and aviation facilities and submerged wetlands. The goal of the competition is to generate and share design responses to these challenges that can be applicable in the San Francisco Bay region and elsewhere.

About BCDC
The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) was created by the state Legislature in 1965 with the charge of minimizing the unnecessary filling of San Francisco Bay. Through BCDC’s efforts, the Bay is now over 24 square miles larger than it was forty years ago. Unfortunately, the greatest threat to the San Francisco Bay Area over the next century is not that the Bay will get smaller, but that climate change will make the Bay larger and threaten existing communities, public infrastructure and wetlands. One of the most publicized impacts of global warming is a predicted acceleration of sea level rise, 1.4 meters (about 55 inches) over the next 100 years, perhaps even higher depending upon the rate at which glaciers and other ice sheets on land melt.

d. labTM presents at the Salone Satellite in Milan “Objects Around the Tablescape“.

Why the title “Objects Around the Tablescape“?
Patrick Chia in conversation with Patrick Chia

PC: Why the terms “objects” and not “products” or “sculpture”?

PC: “Object ” is free - it can be any thing. It could come as it is. It does not come with the baggage and conforms that “product ” or “sculpture” has. It does not takes positions, it is non absolute.

PC: Why ” table” + “scape” and not “desktop”?

PC: Every thing that exists has a relationship with and impacts another. A tree does not only provide shade and fresh air on a landscape, it is also a measure of seasons. It is a measure of time, a measure of space and also a measure of our existence. The object does not exist by itself. Like in the landscape - trees or grass, everything is related in time and in space.

PC: Why “around” and not “on”?

PC: “On” is foreign and transplanted. “Around” seems more organic and it suggest s that the objects have been all along.

PC: Please describe the concept, choice of material and process for each of the pieces.

PC: We are interested in the innate quality of the material and its process; looking at a block of wood and asking it “what it would like to be? “. We are looking for an encounter that has a visceral resonance.

Papergirl is an art project which, in the style of american paperboys, distributes rolled artworks by bicycle in the streets of Berlin.

The project has been carried out once a year since 2006 and grows every constantly. In July 2008, for example, 76 artists from 9 different countries took part in it.
The basic idea with the project is to bring art to the public in a different way from normal; to surprise people and bring them into contact with art in their everyday life.
The initial impulse for this project came with the tightening of a law, in 2005, equating sticking up posters in public places with graffiti-spraying. But the idea of distributing art by bike came more from the search for new ways to bring art straight to society,
and have more fun doing so, than out of fear of possible punishment.
Papergirl is, in short: participatory, analogue, non-commercial and impulsive.

This means:

- Everyone can participate by contributing something and/or by helping with the distribution. Before the rolls are delivered, all contributions presented can be viewed in an exhibition where visitors can look over the complete contents without being fragmented.
- Papergirl is distributed like a newspaper, but not edited or printed like it. It consists of art pieces which are rolled up together. Contributions are handed in by mail or personally and are later included in the art rolls. There are no guidelines as to format, subject matter or quantity, so originals, prints, photos, copies etc. come together. Each roll contains 10-15 different works, meaning that each one holds a unique combination of works!
- The art rolls cannot be sold and they are not delivered to subscribers.
- Giving the work out by bike means that there is no time for any stereotypes when choosing recipients of the pieces. You have to react really fast and spontaneously. Chance plays its part and there is no time Our motto is: Anyone who picks up a roll is lucky, and money can’t buy luck. And giving something is most fun when you don’t expect anything in return.

The art rolls cannot be sold and they are not delivered to subscribers.

Please submit your works at:

While big and wealthy cities in many parts of the world challenge the limits of possibility by building gigantic hotels with fancy shapes, erecting sky-high office towers or constructing hovering philharmonic temples, Berlin sets up a decent mountain. Yet, never at a loss for anything, we do not have to build it. We just picture it to ourselves and pretend its beautiful existence to everyone else: It’s peak exceeds 1000 metres and is covered with snow from September to March…
Hamburg, as stiff as flat, turns green with envy, rich and once proud Munich starts to feel ashamed of its distant Alp-panorama and planners of the Middle-East, experienced in taking the spell off any kind of architectural utopia immediately design authentic copies of the iconic Berlin-Mountain. Tempelhof no longer only is on Berliners’ minds: People come in flocks to - not to see the mountain. Thus,

Come and see The Berg!

In the frame of the 90th anniversary of the Bauhaus, our non-profit organization émaho organizes the bauhaus lab marseille, an interdisciplinary laboratory in association with the Architectural Association (London), the C3 Center for Culture and Communication (Budapest), E-werk (Weimar ) TheaterHaus Jena (Jena), the city of Weimar and with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union 2007-2013.

The bauhaus lab marseille proposes an art residency inspired by Moholy-Nagy’s journey to Marseilles in 1929. His experimental film “Marseille Vieux-Port” will be the starting point for reflection led by artists during the residency. Marseille’s urban development, a contemporary reinterpretation of the Bauhaus and the interdisciplinarity will also be discussed. A lecture’s programme led by actors from different art fields, architecture and urbanism will feed this research process.
To stimulate exchange of ideas and interaction with local communities, the bauhaus lab marseille will offer an opportunity to each artist to conduct a multimedia workshop for young people under the supervision of professional trainers.
A final exhibition open to the public features the results of this reflection and creation time.

To host this event, the bauhaus lab marseille proposes to create a polymorphic space at La Friche de la Belle de Mai, the cultural centre of Marseille. An architectural competition is open to create this cultural travelling centre.

Project Description

The creation of a transportable and modular architectural object is the main aspect of the bauhaus lab marseille project. The aim is to rearrange a space following a reinterpretation of the principles of the Bauhaus: the use of simple geometric forms, the predominance of functionality, the use of industrial materials, transparency, and primary colors. The participants will propose a reinterpretation of these precepts.
This polymorphic place will host multimedia artist workshops, lectures about interdisciplinarity, multimedia workshops for children, and an exhibition.

The physical constraints of the project

The challenge is to create a transportable structure because it will move to various European cities, and will have to adjust according to different uses and locations. Aspects concerning the public (circulation, seating for around 50 people), the management of lighting and access to facilities must be taken into account.
Maximum duration of the construction site: 15 days
The construction period of the winning project is scheduled for the second half of July 2009.

Primary home site: salle Maintenant

The Friche La Belle de Mai provides the “Maintenant” space. This location was designed as a non-closed space, open to traffic, dealing with ephemeral events. The maximum area devoted to the project is 400 m2; its main feature is a frame of 7 meters beams. The proposed project will take into account this structural characteristic without considering it as an immutable or decisive aspect, because it will be rebuilt on other sites.

Actors

During the period of residence (3 weeks), ten artists from various fields - video, performance, sound, photography- will work within the structure. Lectures open to the public as well as multimedia workshops for children will also take place during those 3 weeks. During the exhibition period (2 weeks), the structure will host the works created by artists.

Budget

The project budget is 40,000 euros, of which 10,000 euros is provided as an optional resource. Applicants will have to propose a detailed management of this budget through a DPGF (decomposition of the overall price), which clearly distinguishes these two amounts.

Jury

The Jury members are the architects Matthieu Poitevin and Rémy Marciano, professors at the National Architecture School of Marseille (ENSA), Thierry Ollat, director of the Contemporary Art Museum of Marseille (MAC), Patrick Bardou from Editions Parentheses, and a member of Mécènes du Sud.

Prize-Winners

The seven best projects selected by the jury will form part of an exhibition in Weimar, Germany and in Marseilles in 2009. Inclusion in a publication diffused around Europe is also planned. The winning project will be built and displayed during the bauhaus lab marseille event, in parallel with the contemporary art fair Art-o-Rama, at the Friche de La Belle de Mai in Marseilles. At the end of the Marseilles event, the prize-winning structure will travel to Weimar to become an ephemeral cultural centre, then on to other European cities. The progress of the work from conception to construction will be documented online via an innovative platform: bauhaus.tv hosted by ikono.tv.

Applications

The contest is open to Euro-Mediterranean artists, architects, designers, and stage designers. The criteria for technical feasibility and insurance are essential to the project. We strongly encourage interdisciplinary collaborations.

Registration

Opening date of competition: February 9th 2009. Participants should return the requested documents by post using recorded delivery. The period for our receiving is scheduled to run between the 1st and midnight on the 15th April 2009. The results will be announced no later than 30th April 2009.

Travellers everywhere recognise the Samsonite brand for it’s mix of style, quality and reliability. Whilst encompassing these attributes, Samsonite Baby Travel, strives to be progressive and unique in catering to the lifestyle and needs of modern, active parents.

Let Your Design Journey Continue
Following on the success of last year, we are pleased to launch the 2nd Annual Samsonite Baby Travel competition, encouraging the design of innovative travel products related to travelling with babies and toddlers.

Whether it be a day out, an overnight stay or an extended holiday away, getting your little ones there safely and comfortably, and taking along all the things you need for feeding, bathing, sleeping and playing is a real challenge.

If you have a great idea for a stroller, carrier or car seat, a solution for a portable cot, a feeding chair, a new approach to feeding, bathing and changing little ones on the move, or a great travel bag to carry all babies bits and pieces, we would love to see it. Your product should represent real innovation and fulfill the main criteria for travelling; compact, lightweight, easy to use, safe and durable.
